Prize Giving & Graduation

On Thursday the 28th of June 2007, St. George's School held its annual Prize-Giving and Graduation ceremony. After a week of rain and stormy weather, the sun shone brightly on St. George's and the 17 students graduating on this occasion.

The guest speaker for the occasion was Mr Julian Cook, the founder and CEO of Flybaboo.  Mr Julian Cook was raised in Geneva, son of an Indian mother and a British father. After graduating from a local Catholic school, Mr Cook earned a BSc from the London School of Economics and an MBA from New York’s Columbia University Business School.

In 1995 he completed his pilot’s licence and also joined the Chase Manhattan Bank's Aerospace Group where he was involved in aircraft financing, privatisation & restructuring. In 1999, Julian Cook moved to Southern Winds, a regional airline in Argentina, working closely with the CEO in raising equity and on strategic issues.

In 2000, he founded Newlines Airways Ltd., a UK based start-up airline that aimed at the transatlantic business market. Unfortunately, following the economic slowdown in 2001 and the events in September 2001, the company had to be closed and the project abandoned. In October 2002, Julian co-founded Baboo SA, a Geneva based company specialising in the creation, production and distribution of CDs.   When SwissAir announced they were going to abandon the Geneva-Lugano route in 2003 FlyBaboo was formed with its inaugural flight in November.

The Graduation ceremony started with a performance by the school's Jazz Band.  It was followed by an address from the President of the Board of Directors, Prof Francis Kahn and a performance bz the Junior Choir, featuring Sophie Wright on vocals and Maya Bodenmann on violin.

The Principal, Mrs Steinson then gave her Report on the School Year 2006 - 2007.  Following a performance by the School Choir, with soloist Stephanie Hitchens, it was then time for Mr Cook to give his address and distribute the Prizes and Diplomas.

Further musical performances from Midori Kurokawa on Piano, the School Choir with a song taken from Lord of the Rings and the Jazz Band with a piece from Pirates of the Caribbean, led to Bradley Stark, the Head of School, closing the graduation ceremony with his vote of thanks.

After the ceremony the graduating students enjoyed having their photos taken on this special occasion with their families and all then retired to the school terrace for a special celebratory lunch.  Good luck to all the graduates for the future.
