The annual Music Competition was held on Friday 11th of May and the large number of entries made it necessary to begin at 7 pm. We welcomed Aiglon College's Director of Music, Will Lithgow, and his assistant, Sarah Heath, who undertook the difficult task of judging the playing and singing. This year they were joined by Eleanor Routledge of St. George's Junior Department. The evening got off to a resounding start with the Ensembles Class - groups of two or students playing together. The programme could not have been more different with music by the Beatles, Mozart and Gounod. First place was taken by Patrick Scully and Megan Stark singing the beautiful duet 'Parce Domine' by Gounod. The evening continued with some fine singing and playing and all the young musicians gave a good account of themselves. Some performances were truly outstanding and it was good to hear a number of boy singers.
Inevitably, the Advanced Class, although small this year, contained some
of the most taxing music and Midori Kurukawa rose to the extreme
challenge of Liszt's Lieberstäume. However, the trophy for the best
overall performance was eventually won by Patrick Scully with a superb
performance of the song 'Ole' Man River'. Tasha Tomkinson of Year Seven
also received a special mention as she came first in two different classes, once playing the flute and the other as a singer. Well done to all those who took part and who prepared
themselves with such professionalism. Results:
