Excursions

Liverpool - Year 12

A group of year 12 students accompanied by Mr Jones and Mrs Sanford spent an action packed 4 days in the fabulous north England city of Liverpool. The trip included visits to both the Anglican and Catholic cathedrals, a duck-tour of the city and the dock (yes, a big yellow tank), a 'son et lumiere' show of the history of Liverpool, a classical music concert by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Everton ladies versus Doncaster Rovers women's football match, a fabulous performance of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing and a trip to the famous Cavern Club.

Students also got the chance to experience cooking their own breakfast!!, traveling on public transport, eating in a variety of restaurants, a spot of shopping and the hustle and bustle of a thriving city.

Anecdote

The tour guide at the Anglican cathedral in Liverpool, a lovely woman; Mrs Roberts, who gave us a fabulous tour, used to be a student at Huyton College in Liverpool. She remembers her headmistress Osyth Potts leaving during her time there to become the first Headteacher of St. George's!

Year 12 – Geography / Biology Fieldwork to Slapton.

Nine students with Mr Britnell and Mrs Peeters-Weem left on Friday lunchtime for fieldwork in the UK – South Devon to be exact.  We had an uneventful flight and all was going well until we encountered Virgin Trains which were running 45 minutes late.  We finally arrived in Slapton at 9:30pm all tired but glad to have arrived.  A short talk from the Slapton tutor and then to bed.

In the morning the Geographers and Biologist split up.  Geographers had a 10km walk with many stops along the way looking at coastal features and measuring beaches.  The biologists were catching freshwater bugs in Slapton stream.  Things went quickly and we were soon into day two.  This was a combined day where we were all studying succession on the shingle ridge.  Being near the beach some of the students couldn't resist a paddle at lunchtime and then back to work.  Day three saw another combined day in Slapton Woods and the catching of snails (not to eat!), which went down with different degrees of enthusiasm (Jenna actually managed to touch three).  Everything went very quickly and day 4 arrived rapidly.  This was another split day with the geographers studying urban deprivation in Plymouth while the biologists studied zonation on the rocky shore.

All in all a good time was had by all and all the students felt they had learnt a lot and had a good time.

Mr Britnell and Mrs Peeters-Weem would like to thank the students for their excellent behaviour and outstanding enthusiasm.

Year 11 Trip to Verdun

'Following the exams year 11 students together with Mr Gillan, Mlle Aminot and Mrs
Schibler visited Metz and Verdun in northern France. The students visited sites along the
french second world war maginot line and also spent a moving day on the first world war
battlefields around verdun. Local guides made each visit memorable and helped to prepare
the students for IB courses next year. There was still to relax, on a visit to some
thermal baths, dinner in metz and a final thrilling day at Europapark'
