The
Social Services Committee have been really busy this year. Here is a
brief description of what we have done this year. The
form activities: Mr Gillan’s run, the House party, the St
Valentine’s disco and the non-uniform day, the Poppy-selling, les
cartons du coeur (70 Kgs worth of products!), the selling of chocolate
hearts, the car raffle, the Real Madrid shirts raffle, the balloon
launch, the Burier afternoon, the JD summer fête together with the
Christmas parcels have allowed us to raise, once again, a substantial
amount of money (6000.- frs this term for a total of 33,000 frs.- this
year) We
would like to add that there are people who have been a real asset to
the Social Services this year as they are always ready to help, very
often without public knowledge. Well done to them and in particular
everyone who has spent most of their Wednesday afternoons visiting the
elderly people of the Burier Retirement Home. Special thanks too, to
Ruan, Brad and Jethro who found the courage to wake up at 4:00 o’clock
in the morning and spend 10 hours cycling around a lake covering 274 kms!
They raised about 700.- frs. What an achievement! Very impressive,
well done boys! We
still need more volunteers to help more regularly. This year, we tried a
new representative system which could have worked better mostly if you
had not been so busy…but don’t forget that commitment
means…commitment! We don’t need many people, but we do need
dedicated ones! Next
year, we have different projects lined up. One of them is to
sponsor two children in Africa throughout their studies. We will receive
letters, drawings and news from them and their developing school and we
will financially participate in their education and well-being. We also
have an idea of giving St George’s CD "The Dog Ate My Homework"
a sequel. This time it will be a DVD (more details about
this in September). We will also help a school in Northern Africa by
providing school stationery that we will collect here at St George's.
Next year, there will be plenty of things to do, no time for idleness! Thank
you ever so much for all your hard work this year and your help. Have a
great summer and see you back in September! B.
