There were slightly fewer entries this year for the Music Competition, which was held on Wednesday the 10th of May 2006, but the standard of performance was, once more, very high. The
evening began with class two singers and instrumentalists (these being
of about grade four standard) and there were three entrants (flute,
trombone, voice). The class was won by Robin Cowie with a fine
performance of 'Consider Yourself' complete with appropriate accent! Next
came class three singers and instrumentalists (about grade five) and
there were performances on flute, violin, piano, trombone and voice. The
winner was Eri Ichijo (piano) who played La Tarantelle by Burgmüller.
Brad Stark (trombone) came second with 'Just that Minute' and third
place went to Megan Stark (voice) who sang 'I could have danced all
night'. There
were three entries in the duos class and this was won by Midori Kurokawa
and Lyn Teo with a fine rendering the first movement of Mozart's 40th
Symphony arranged for piano duet. After an
interval in which wine and canapés were served, the Advanced Classes
began. The winner of the singing category was Patrick Scully with a
spirited performance of 'I got plenty o' nuttin'. There were just three
entries in the Advanced instrumental class, all pianists. The winner was
Lyn Teo. Her memorised playing of the first movement of Beethoven's
monumental Sonata Pathétique was stunning. It was no surprise,
therefore, when the adjudicators announced that she had been awarded the
cup for the best overall performance. A big 'thank you' to all those who took part and especially to our adjudictors: Will Lithgow - Director of Music at Aiglon College - with his colleague Sarah Heath joined by our own Director of Studies, John Trethewey. Peter Onslow
