| This
year, the competition was held on one evening (May 4th). There were five classes in
all: class two instrumentalists; class two singers (grade 3 and 4 approx); duos - any two student performers; open class
singers; open class instrumentalists (grade 5 and beyond). The evening was marked by some stunning performances, especially in the open class instrumental section
where, predictably, the battle for the overall best performance and music trophy is
fought. The level of achievement of the pupils was evident from the opening with a fine performance by Océane Herpin-Saunier of the first movement of Vivaldi's violin concerto in G. This gained second place and in first place was Eri Ichijo (piano) who played 'Nefeli' by Einaudi. Next were the class two singers. The winner of this section was Eline Pauwels who demonstrated exceptional poise and communication with the audience in a performance of 'Wishing you were somehow here again'. It was also good to hear a piece played and composed by its performer - Brandon Bakus - with 'Disposable', who gained a merit certificate. There were only two duo entries this year and the winning pair was Gonzalo Ceron and Elina Fokina with a lovely rendition of 'Every time we say goodbye'. Eline Pauwels and Megan Stark also gave a good account of 'I know him so well' from the musical 'Chess'. After the interval we had the open class singers. There were five entries and it was good to hear a number of boys in this section. In first place was Stephanie Hitchens with 'Summertime' and with an Honours certificate was Edward Harty who sang 'If ever I would leave you.' The open class instrumentalists played some demanding pieces and the adjudicators had an unenviable task ahead of them. There were eight stunning performances on trombone, violin and piano but in first place with a beautiful performance of Debussy's 'Clair de Lune' was Sonja Riley who was also awarded the trophy for the best overall performance. In second place was Lynn Teo who played 'October' and 'November' by Tchaikovsky. All in all, it was a memorable evening and sincere thanks must go to the team of three adjudicators from Aiglon College: Paul Foulkes, Sarah Heath and Will Lithgow. |
