Geography Field Trips

Year 7 Geography Fieldtrip

On Tuesday the 17th of May the Year 7 students, together with Miss Byng and Mr Jupp, visited the Les Mosses area to study water and rivers. They began at the Lac de L’Hongrin barrage, looking at the design of the dam and the reservoir it has created. Next they enjoyed a pleasant stroll to Lac Lioson where they appreciated the view of the glacial lake.

Some hardy (foolish?) boys even decided to take a quick dip despite the lake still being covered in snow and ice. Lastly (after a quick stop for an ice cream) the students measured the small stream as it leaves Les Mosses. They were able to collect information about the size and shape of the channel and the velocity of the water, all data that can be analysed in class.

 Year 8 Geography Fieldtrip

On Wednesday 18 May the year 8 students, with Miss Byng, Mr Gillan, Miss Bolton, Skye and Mr Jupp, visited the Trient glacier and gorge. Starting at La Forclaz they followed the old railway out towards the snout of the glacier. This used to be the route that ice was carried along before making its way to the local towns and used for cooling before the invention of the fridge-freezer! An invigorating climb to just below the snout was welcomed by all (even Jimena) before sketches and worksheets were completed to build upon the class work already undertaken. Finally the students visited the Trient gorge.

Year 10 Geography and Biology Fieldtrip

After a postponement due to poor weather (necessary to avoid student moaning!) the Year 10s completed a day’s data collection in the Les Mosses area on Thursday 26 May. Mr Lineham encouraged his students to draw beautiful sketches of the alpine flora in preparation for their end of term exam. The students also created a Les Moss Cocktail of the scents found in the woodland areas. In contrast Mr Jupp forced his students to get wet measuring the mountain stream to investigate the changes that occur along its length. They also enjoyed some exercise to reach the beautiful Lac Lioson to sketch and discuss the glacial landscape.

Year 12 Vevey study

As final preparation for their AS exam the Year 12 Geographers studied Vevey in minute detail. They examined building height and use by completing two transects across the town. Later they visited some of the residential areas to compare the variety that exists. After more than 5 hours continuous walking and data collection they were permitted to get the bus home.
