Talent Show

On Wednesday the 14th of March a talent show was held at St. George's School to raise money for charity.  Many students took part in the event to show the school what they had to offer.

The students put on a magnificent performance for the many teachers, friends and family who turned up to watch the event.  The crowd was entertained by the hosts for the occasion, Patrick and Maya, who between acts managed to make everyone laugh.

There were ten acts in all.  Students showed us how thez could, dance, sing, act and play musical instruments.  The participants were aged from 11 up to 18 years of age.

Thanks go to Sitora and Daryna, who organised this event to raise money for Social Services and make up their CAS hours for their IB programme.  It may have been a tiring event to plan for the two students but they felt it was worth it as it helped a good cause.  All money raised from the event will be going to the charity, "Fond'action Contre Le Cancer" which St. George's School supports.    Fond'action contre le cancer is the only organisation in Swizterland which is dedicated to clinical research and immunotherapy.  All the money it raises will therefore be used for the research into a cure for cancer.

Year 10/11 Spanish Trip

On Saturday 3rd March, years 10 and 11 Spanish went to Sion on a trip. First up was a delicious serving of tapas, including all different sorts of fish, complete with fries and bread! The food was really good, and everyone was full and happy by the time we left.

We then looked around the beautiful town of Sion, before travelling to the school where we watched the movie, "Héctor". It was an amazing film and was very thought-provoking,and definitely improved our vocabulary! All in all, it was a brilliant day.

Animal Farm

On Thursday March 29th the English department took a group of students to see Animal Farm at the theatre in Vevey. Performed by the brilliant American Drama Group, the interpretation of Orwell’s classic novel was original and eclectic.

A great night out was had by all. Earlier this term, the department ran a trip to Geneva to see a performance of Fahrenheit 451, the futuristic novel by Ray Bradbury. More trips planned for next term!

News from the Creative Arts

To celebrate Valentine’s Day, the English Department ran an in-school poetry competition.  The various poems on the theme of love were read by many and thoroughly enjoyed.  Congratulations to Sophie Watson for winning the Junior category and Laura Nixon for the Senior category.

TES Newsday was, once again, a great success.  The masterful Mrs Brown was at the helm to assist her team of budding Year 11 journalists.  An incredible 18 papers were completed and posted, leaving behind a bedraggled but contented Year 11 team.  The paper looks fantastic and we hope that it will go on to do well in the competition.  We eagerly await the results in May.

Fahrenheit 451 was attended by many students.  Year 12 students were there to gather ideas for the upcoming house plays.  As always, St George’s students were a pleasure to take out.  Thanks to all those who signed up to see Animal Farm.  One day you too could end up being a house play director so make sure that you come along to the theatre for some tips, but mostly just come to enjoy it!

The first ever SGIS Forensics competition was held at ISL in early March.  St George’s was admirably represented by eight students who took part in the Oral Interpretation of Literature category, and the Serious and Comic duet categories.  Thanks to all students who attended, we hope that the experience was a worthy one.  Congratulations to Laura Nixon and Robin Cowie for their third prize in the Comic Duet category.  It was especially pleasing to hear that some students found the time to make some new friends from other schools.  Next year we hope to take a bigger team and put St George’s on the Forensics map.
