Young Writers Competition

The English Department sent poetry entries to the Young Writers competition earlier this term and were pleased to learn that all of our entries are to be published.  Students have ordered copies of the book and are looking forward to seeing their names in print.  Who knows, it could be the foundation block of future careers?

Journalist Visits School

Mr Messeilleur with Year 11

In February we were pleased to welcome M. Philip Messeilleur, a journalist,  to the English department.  M. Messeilleur works for ‘Le Matin’ and he very kindly gave up some of his valuable time to speak to Year 11 about his work as part of their preparation for the TES Newsday in early March.

The visit took the form of a question and answer session, with students posing a variety of queries about his reasons for becoming a journalist, the most memorable stories he had worked on and the day-to-day aspects of the job.  M. Messeilleur was a very entertaining speaker who kept both teachers and students gripped with his anecdotes and advice for budding reporters.  Above all, he emphasised that a good journalist must be someone who loves getting to know people and enjoy working with them and he made us realise that a career in journalism is a fascinating one in which no two days are alike.

His visit was extremely useful to Year 11 because he was able to guide them in their selection of material for news reports and give them invaluable advice on how to prepare the layout of a newspaper.  He expressed an interest in coming to visit us again soon to see for himself how the Newsday had gone.  I am sure he will be impressed with Year 11’s excellent ‘Helvetica Herald’.
