The first of the ever-popular lunchtime concerts this term was noted for performances of some well-known piano pieces by some of our more advanced pianists. These included Beethoven's piano sonata in G, Chopin's Walz in C# minor, and Glinka's "Parting" played by Sonja Riley, Midori Kurokawa and Lyn Li Teo. Eri Ichijo played "Nefeli" by Einaudi.
It was also good to hear a range of other performances. "If ever I would leave you" from Camelot, beautifully sung by Ed Harty; "The Old Castle" by Mussorgsky, played on the trombone by Brad Stark; "Abendlied" for violin duo by Tours, played by Brita Midness and Midori Kurokawa. The second concert had a greater vocal element with duos by Patrick Scully and Stephanie Hitchens "The Point of No Return" (from Phantom of the Opera) and Elena Fokina and Gonzalo Ceron "All I ask of you" (from Phantom of the Opera). There was great variety at this concert tool. Melanie Milsted played bass guitar to a CD backing "Pieces" - Sum 41; Anna Doudoukina played Chopin's haunting Nocturne in E minor and Tamara Paquin demonstrated great tone on the trumpet in a lively performance of Charpentier's Prelude to the Te Deum.
In the last week of term, there were two concerts, one given by members of staff and the other by the Jazz Band. In the former, there was a Renaissance Band (three recorders and violin), solos by Jan Byng (Sax), Lyn Baerfuss, Ste Jones (voice) and Inna Enz (piano).
The Jazz Band played some pieces newly added to their repertoire and the foot tapping mood was set with "Cruella de Vil" from "101 Dalmatians" followed by the theme from the films "Greatest American Hero" and "Mission Impossible". Also played was "Woodchopper's Ball" and Elton John's "Can you feel the love tonight".
