Over to Mr Hill of the PE Department for a brief synopsis of the sporting caldender this term.
Skiing
has obviously dominated this winter term and one of the most encouraging aspects
of the season was the unprecedented level of achievement at both ends of the
ability spectrum. Groups 1 to 4 were no longer considered to be beginner or
lower intermediate groups, as many students were comfortably reaching Red League
status. The inter-house ski races witnessed perhaps the highest standard
of competition seen at St. George's and the aerial show in the snow park later
that afternoon was, in ski movie vernacular, truly awesome.
Students of all levels seem to have been extremely motivated to extend their
skills this year and that willingness to learn is to be admired. Your
level of confidence on the slopes seems to have taken a quantum leap in 2003 and
I hope you will carry that self-assuredness through into other areas of school
life.
Best Progress Awards in Skiing this term went to Ruan Roux of Year
9, Libby Urquhart-Ducharme of Year 8 and Ross Winter of Year 11. The
Highest Level Award went to Edward Harty of Year 11.
The ski team this term swelled to comprise around 25 students and the interest
in ski racing is such that we hope to have St. George's team jackets next
year. Look out for details of these in the Autumn.
In inter-school competitions, several students have made a name for
themselves. Stephanie Hitchens of Year 9, Juliet Pearce of Year 7 and
Branden Stobbs of Year 8 collected a selection of medals on the slopes; in the
pool, Sara Bosshart of Year 11 and André Sanchini of Year 10 harvested gold at
Basel; Isabel Edwards of Year 10 was a runner up at the ADISR badminton
championships, with Victoria Sergueeva and Ross Winter both of Year 10 placed
4th and the girls' volleyball team were promoted to Division 1.
Congratulations to everyone who represented the school this term!
Inter House competition remains as fierce as ever and once again the honours
were fairly evenly spread with Atalanta winning the Unihoc and the Volleyball,
Diana the Football and Minerva the Skiing!
