Lunchtime Concerts

The Spring Term is relatively relaxed musically, following the intense activity of the Stage Musical of the previous term. This gives us time to produce the popular series of lunchtime concerts which provide the opportunity for pupils to perform under informal circumstances.

There are some fine young musicians in Years 7 and 8 so the first concert was given solely by pupils from these two years. The standard of playing was very high from everyone but of particular note were performances of Debussy's difficult "Gradus ad Parnassum" by Sonja Riley (Yr 7) and Scarlatti's Sonata in D minor by Sophie Jardin (Yr 8).

The next two concerts were given by pupils from all years. It was good to hear a variety of instruments and voices at these with fine playing by Simon Maeder (flute) and Brad Stark (trombone). The latter's interpretation of 'Rag and Bone Rag' was particularly well received. Michelle Lobo gave a fine rendering of Britten's beautiful setting of the folk song 'Sally Gardens'. It was also pleasing that Sophie Jardin played two of her own compositions. The concert series was rounded off by a fluent performance of Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag by Nicholas Hippenmeyer.

All in all, this second concert series was very well supported and received and we shall have to consider a new venue for next year as the audiences have outgrown the chapel.

Space does not permit the naming of all performers above but many thanks to all those who took part.
