Inter House Competitions
In the last sports review we speculated on when, or indeed if, Atalanta
would be brought to heel following their runaway success in Inter-House
competitions in recent years. Well, the winds of change, they are
a-blowin'.
Minerva were the first to break the monopoly when the stole the football trophy by the slenderest of margins. Mr Katz then celebrated with an extra sugar cube in his tea as Diana won their first title of the millennium in the unihoc competition; and the skiing could not have been closer with Minerva piping Atalanta to first place on the final run of the day. Nevertheless, Atalanta were determined to show that their reign has not come to an end by winning back the volleyball cup!
Congratulations to everyone who took part in the Inter-House sports events this term. The spirit with which you enter into them is an integral part of the spirit of the school as a whole.

Inter School Competitions
St. George's teams and individual competitors are renowned for their
sense of fair-play. At the SGIS swimming championships, Sara Bosshart
enhanced this reputation further by handing back a gold medal that she knew was
not rightfully hers. All the same, she still managed to win five other
medals, which, along with medals won by Filipa Mendes, Chloe Harty, Shannon
Hinton and Nathalie Attar, brought the team tally to twelve. Training at
the pool in winter is not always an attractive prospect but your self-discipline
paid off. An impressive medal haul, girls - well done!

In basketball, the junior boys team also achieved a very satisfying fourth place in the SGIS Championships in Geneva.

Finally, the interest in ski racing is growing all the time and this year St. George's pupils finished higher than ever on the results tables of every ski event they took part in. A special mention goes to Vivianne Loopuyt, who won a silver medal at the Governor's Cup races in Leysin and to Angela Hitchens, who won a bronze medal in the combined event at the toughest of all the competitions, the ADISR Championships in Villars.

The Swiss Snow League Badges
If you didn't move up through the Swiss Snow League system this year,
don't worry. It sometimes takes more than a year to make the leap to
another level. However, there are some individuals who deserve special
mention for the enormous strides they have made. Brahma Kumar, Sara Bosshart and
André Verster were all beginners last year but now ski in the top groups; Amy
Hellier and Angela Corlett and the very courageous Mr Ward should be commended
for their determination to succeed at snowboarding; and it can also be no
coincidence that the boarding house girls who made the most progress this year
were the ones who made the best use of Sunday ski outings.
