We have started a Girl Guide Unit for girls who are between 9 and 12 years of age. The girls have a lot of fun learning about their community, nature, camping, home skills, playing games, dancing, making crafts and of course, singing songs.
We have also started a Pathfinder Unit for girls aged between 12 and 15 years. The Pathfinders follow a similar program to the Guides but at a more advanced level. Also the Pathfinders run their own meetings, learn to co-operate through teamwork, learn to cope with peer pressures and help decide on the outings and activities for their programme. The Pathfinders strive to achieve leadership skills through responsibilities they are given. This gives them confidence to achieve new goals and skills.
Several
parents of children currently attending either the Junior Department or
Secondary School are involved in both the Girl Guide and Pathfinders Units.
| Mrs. Hinton, Mrs. Ives and Mrs. Silson are Guide leaders whilst Mrs. Harty and Mrs. Johnson are the Pathfinders leaders. |

Both Guides and Pathfinders work on different challenges related to their programme and the Guides also work on interest badges within their unit or at home. Our Guides are presently working on their Interpreter Badge. The Guides are learning simple phrases and words in French, Japanese, German and also sign language. The Pathfinders group have recently enjoyed their first outing to Fun Planet.
Our two units had their first enrolment at St. George’s School during Thinking Day Week. Twenty girls each said their Guide Promise and Guide Law. A candle ceremony took place which was enjoyed by the girls’ parents and Miss McHugh, the Vice Principal of St. George’s. We danced and sang “Happy Birthday to our Founders” and enjoyed refreshments. We will be accepting more girls into our two units in September 2000. Our girls learn skills, make lasting friendships and have fun. Why not give us a try?
Yours in Guiding,
Sue Hinton, Guide Leader

How Guiding Began
Lord Baden-Powell, retired from the army wrote a book called “Scouting for Boys”. The book sold out immediately and the Boy Scouts began. In 1909, a small group of girls showed up at a Boy Scouts rally at the Crystal Palace. When Lord Baden-Powell asked who the girls were, the girls replied, “We are Girl Scouts.” Lord Baden-Powell asked his sister Agnes to start something for the girls and chose the name Girl Guides.
Lord Baden-Powell married Olave Soames in 1912 and she became “World Chief Guide” in 1930. Lord and Lady Baden-Powell celebrated their birthdays on February 22nd. Guiding and Scouting groups hold International Thinking Day Celebrations during this week each year. This is done to celebrate international friendships.
