St. George’s opened the football season with a friendly triangular tournament for Years 7 & 8 against two Aiglon College teams. The two matches played – one win and one defeat, provided a good benchmark for improvement. From this point on we could analyse strengths and weaknesses and start to develop a better understanding of the game.

Football Squad:
Back row (l to r) Edward Harty, Nick Kelson, Simon Maeder, Steven Van
Beek, Francisco Fassi.
Front row (l to r) Edgar Quaglia, Urs Suess, Michael
Spelling and Gonzalo Ceron.
The 7’s and 8’s went on to Florimont to play in the ADISR Championships for minimes (those born in 87/88). They earned themselves the nickname St. George Graham’s, after playing out three tightly contested no score draws against Florimont II, Champittet and Le Rosey. Unfortunately this was not quite good enough to put the team into the semi-finals and so we played off for fifth and sixth place against Florimont first team, losing 3-0.
Squad :

ADISR Category 3 Boys Tournament, 3 November 1999
The Georgian team surpassed themselves at this hotly contested event in Rolle. Each player had a pre-determined role to play within an overall team strategy. The players showed great self-discipline in sticking to the plan and pulled off two convincing victories against Le Rosey II and Florimont II winning both 2-0. Despite losing to the eventual runners-up 4-1 in their final group match, the squad made it through to the quarter finals where they met La Chataignerie from Geneva, a school with over a thousand pupils on the roll. Although St. George’s kept a clean sheet in the first half, the superior strength of the Genevois showed through in the second half when they ran away with the match 4-0. La Chataignerie went on to win the tournament convincingly. So the St. George’s boys can take heart from the compliment the Chataignerie team manager paid to them when he said how surprised he was that such a small school could take on much larger schools and push them so hard. Well done to all the boys involved – a performance to be proud of!
