Ironman Update The
17th of July this year saw Mr Gillan take on IRON MAN
SWITZERLAND – a triathlon involving a 3.8 km swim, 180 km bike ride
and a 42 km run. Starting
at 7.00 am, 2000 bobbing heads plunged into Lake Zurich. A fairly calm
swim was followed then by the bike – a 3 lap course. With temperatures soaring on
the hilly course, the superb support was welcomed, especially on
‘heartbreak hill’. The 4 lap run course was tough and the crisps
at the feed stations proved to be good energy food. The finish was
deafening and the sense of achievement amazing, even though it took me
14 hours and 14 minutes and most of the others had finished! Thanks to all the sponsors who raised 1400 chf for Margaux’s charity. Mike
Gillan Social Services Report - Autumn Term 2005 As always this term has been very productive and efficient. Despite the
fact that a new system, tutor groups, was applied everybody succeeded in
raising 100 Swiss Francs during the Autumn term. The most popular events
this term were Tutor Group Bake Sales. Another event which raised 184
Swiss Francs was the Poppy Sale. One of the special events held this term was “Noel dans les cartons de
chaussures”. This was mainly organised by the Junior Department,
nonetheless the Senior School supported it wholeheartedly. The task was
to fill the box with gifts and sweets and cover it in Christmas paper.
These were later donated to underprivileged children of different
age groups. Thank you to all those who participated! Furthermore with Mr Chapuis’ help a Carton du Coeur event was also run.
Carton du Coeur is a local non-profitable charitable association which
helps people in need in the Montreux/Vevey area. Parents, students
and teachers once again have been very generous. The main event held this term was the sale of raffle tickets, in order to
raise money for Margaux’s Charity “Fond’action Contre le Cancer”.
In fact this was the biggest fund-raising activity our school has ever
undertaken. A Fiat car was generously donated by Mr Marchionne, many
thanks on behalf of St. George's School. An incredible
4,700 tickets were sold by St. George's students and teachers.
This was a real success. A big thanks goes to Mr Chapuis who was in
charge and who sacrificed his weekend time in order to sell as many
tickets as possible. He was also supported by other staff members, in
particular by Mme. Chambovey. Overall we have raised 20600, Swiss Francs
from this event. Bravo!!! Despite all the cheerful moments we shared throughout this term, one of
the saddest events was held on 5th of December. To celebrate
Margaux’s life a Memorial Service, organised by Miss Hickey, took
place in the Sports Hall. Speeches were made and songs were sung at this
very moving service. A tree planting ceremony was held in the school
grounds, which was followed by a presentation of a cheque for 100,000
Swiss Francs. Prof. Leyvraz of the Fond'action Contre le Cancer
was very grateful to accept this donation. To finish off the term a Non-Uniform day was organised by the Social Services
committee which, as always, proved to be a great success. Next term we are planning to organise a variety of events. So do
have a rest during the vacation and come back with lots of energy and
fresh ideas. Have a great holiday. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everybody,
from the Social Services Team. Written by Valeria Ivashchenko and Alissa Filatova
