It was a damp morning in late October when Philip Rose arrived to give his presentations on ‘States of Matter’. His enthusiasm for the subject inspired the students who became fully involved from the word go. Whether considering how to observe or experimenting all were keen to participate. The use of ‘dry ice’ and liquid nitrogen helped to bring the topic alive and his production of an indoor weather system was most impressive. All of the students handled the dry ice briefly and at –78°C this was the coldest they had ever experienced, but this paled into insignificance up against the test tube of liquid nitrogen the touched, around –190°C…..brrr! Still when invited to plunge their hands straight into the liquid many students volunteered, and were delighted when they emerged unscathed. For many students the highlight was Mr. Rose’s final demonstration. Firstly he showed how the carbon dioxide in soft drinks caused a gentle hiss when the bottle was opened. We were then taken across to the tennis courts where he filled a bottle with lots of dry ice and a little water. The explosion that followed the pressure build up was immense. All of the students enjoyed the demonstrations and some even learned a little Physics. Thank you very much Mr. Rose. |
