Foire St. Martin

On a cold but sunny Tuesday the 9th of November thirty-two students of 17 nationalities accompanied by a Geography teacher, Mr Jupp and two language teachers, Mme. Chambovey (German/French) and Mme. Bodenmann (French /Spanish)  went to Vevey to watch the parade of the legendary St Martin, riding on his white horse amongst a mélange of cows, sheep and people in traditional costumes...

As it has been for the past 535 years,  "La place du marché " is today a big public market where local products are sold. Visitors enjoy the traditional Soupe à la courge or Saucisses aux choux while celebrating the end of a long wine harvest & agricultural season before the quiet of winter.

The excursion then led us to the winding old streets of Vevey : l’Hôtel de Ville, la fontaine de St Martin, les caveaux de la Fête des Vignerons, la Grenette where grain used to be weighed and sold, la rue du Lac with its antiques and boutiques, l’Hôtel de la Clef where J.J.Rousseau used to stay, the Vevey old prison...

Why visit la Foire de la St Martin ? Because it provides a perfect opportunity to enhance students knowledge of the area in which we live, to recognize cultural differences, to encourage inter-cultural experiences and  thus to develop our awareness of the myriad of cultures that make-up our everyday lives.

Cross Curricular Language/Art Project Work

Cross-curricular Project Art and Languages:
Precolombian Pottery

On Tuesday 21st of September, Year 7 visited the exhibition "Trésors de la céramique précolombienne" at l’Hermitage in Lausanne. Explanations were given to students in French and it was most encouraging to see their enthusiasm in discovering the history and daily lives of Precolombian societies.

Following the visit, students did some research in their Spanish and French lessons, on the three main Pre-Colombian civilisations. They then experimented with drawings, paintings and clay pottery making in their Art classes.  For those of you unable to see the display which has been on display in the school lounge during October here is a pictorial review.
