Sporting News, Autumn 2000

Football has dominated the early part of the fixtures calendar. The junior boys and the junior girls both have young squads with players competing against older and more experienced opposition.  This has meant that results have been modest.  However, the bigger picture shows a growing interest in this sport and hopefully, with a little perseverance and the passing of the years, St. George’s teams will be able to achieve extrinsic results to match their intrinsic enthusiasm.

Wednesday night 8-a-side

The junior boys joined a new venture this year – a Wednesday night 8-a-side mini football championship, involving four schools from the area and held over three evenings in the early part of term.  Lacking a little practice and team cohesion, the boys came 4th/4.  However, they will know what to expect next time around.  It is hoped that this championship, with its format of regular games and minimal travelling, will get bigger for next year and may incorporate a girls’ league. Watch this space!

Girls’ Friendly Triangular Tournament.  4th October.

Such is the popularity of football amongst the junior girls that we were able to field two teams against a visiting squad from Aiglon.  ‘The Swords’ and ‘The Shields’ each played against the Aiglon girls, notching up a draw and a loss, before clashing (in Maryam’s case quite literally) with each other.  The games were great fun to watch and provided a valuable learning experience for all the girls, many of whom are quite new to the game.

SGIS Football Championships.

Both the boys’ and the girls’ championships were hit by heavy rain.  The boys had to travel to an artificial pitch in France for their group games (providing invaluable international experience?!) whilst the girls were forced to play 9-a-side on more limited facilities the following day.

Our lack of physical stature in the boys’ tournament was very evident.  The team finished 7th/8.  However, the chaps should take heart from the fact that the squad has two more years playing together in this age group and their presence will be felt more strongly next time.

The girls thoroughly enjoyed their day in the rain, playing a total of six games and finishing 7th/7.  However, they did not achieve their aim of scoring at least one goal in the tournament which meant Mr. Hill escaped having to do one hundred press-ups. Better luck next time girls.

SGIS Junior Boys’ Basketball Championships

‘Seconds remaining on the clock with the Georgians trailing by two points.
Kelson receives the ball just outside the three point line…he shapes up to shoot…Kelson, from downtown…sinks it!!!’

And so ended what was effectively the bronze medal play-off match against Bern, victory being secured by an audacious 3 point attempt from Nicholas Kelson with only 2.5 seconds left on the clock.

A nail-biting finish and a fantastic result.  In fact this is the first time that a boys’ team from the senior school has won a medal at this level – all the more impressive when you consider that we were playing schools up to ten times our size in number. Well done boys, a day to remember and to be proud of.

ADISR Championship  1st November Junior Boys’ Football

The junior boys’ football team came home on Wednesday 1st November having had a very enjoyable day of competition at the ADISR Championships. After a torrid time in our first 2 matches, losing heavily in both games, morale was at a low.  Effort was poor and team spirit virtually non-existent.  However, the team then made a conscious decision to avoid blame and recrimination and instead pull together and play as a team. The last 2 matches were far more enjoyable, the boys securing victory in their final confrontation to finish in 7th position.

Well done to all the teams who took part in the SGIS 5-a-sides.  We looked stronger this year and I feel sure that this is due to the committed turn out at team practices this term.  Every day in every way we get a little better!!

Thanks to Mr Hill, our intrepid sports reporter for photos and review of events.  Keep up the good work Mr Hill.
