House Afternoons

As usual the getting-to-know-you afternoon for new House Staff and students took place within the school grounds on the first Friday of the new term.  Bathed in sunshine each of the Houses took up its position and an afternoon of fun and games ensued.  Here is a brief resumé, courtesy of the Student House Representatives.

Atalanta House Afternoon

On Friday 15th September all members of Atalanta House poured onto the sports field for an afternoon of fun.  We dived into the afternoon with Mr Hill’s game of unwinding human knots, which proved to be eventful.

Other games followed which included Mrs Ward’s game of passing hoops over Australian animals (us), Miss Hershkorn’s memory game, Mme Bodenmann’s game of ducking for apples (which was a good training session for Inter-House swimming) and Miss Hammel’s game of trying to create a dog (a balloon dog) but ended up with strangling it.

Later that afternoon, every tutor group was given a white sheet to draw anything that represented Atalanta House for them.  This was a successful activity and hopefully the painted sheets can be used as banners during inter-house events.  The afternoon ended with a spectacular water display leaving everyone drenched due to leaking water bottles and sponges thrown by tutor groups.

Diana House Afternoon

On the House Afternoon all of Diana House assembled outside in the school field to play games, have fun and meet one another.

In the first game we played we all had to divide into our tutor groups and line up behind a white cone.  The game involved carrying a spoon in our mouths, on which was a tennis ball.  Everyone agreed that eggs would have been too messy.  To win the game we had to run with the spoon in our mouths to another white cone and come back again.  The winning tutor group won a packet of chocolates to be shared equally, (as the students had to remind their tutors more than once…)

We played a lot of games that afternoon, but the most important one, I think, was where we all sat in a circle and Gail came around with a recorder playing national anthems.  When your national anthem was played you had to stand up.

One of a few really cool competitions was an art competition.  We all got into groups and were given a very large piece of paper.  On that we had to draw and then paint a letter that would go into the word ‘Diana’.  The tutor group which came up with the most creative letter won the prize, a large bag of chocolates.  Some of the groups did handprints and fingerprints.  One very creative group thought of footprints but then we decided against it as we would have been very messy for the rest of the Diana House Afternoon.  All in all Diana House had a very creative afternoon and everyone learned a lot about everyone else.

Minerva House Afternoon

On the day of our House Afternoon the weather was great, maybe a bit warm, but everybody had the Minerva spirit.

After lunch I went to room one to blow up some balloons for the first game.  At 2 o’ clock all of the Minervians were gathering around the fishpond to do Miss Hill’s famous ‘getting-to-know-you’ quiz.  Sadly I could not join them because we had to bring the balloons outside, but they flew off and started exploding, so we had to hurry to get them back inside.  Then the prefects took over and it was quite fun to see Virginia panicking when we had to organise the games and half of the balloons had blown up.

The first game we had was quite fun.  Every tutor group was lined up and had to pass a balloon between the legs of the person behind them.  Some of the balloons we used then also blew up.

The second game was my favourite.  There was one ‘Jane’ and one ‘Tarzan' from each tutor group and ‘Tarzan had to save ‘Jane’ from the ‘Lion’.  Then he had to explain why he was late for their special date.  It was especially funny to see Mr Ward on his knees explaining to Miss Hill why he was late for their date…

As the afternoon went on and we played more games I could see that everyone was having a great time and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Miss Hill and all the senior students in MINERVA for a great day out.                                                                                                                    Linus, Year 12.
